UPDATE

Spring Discipleship Conference 2020

March 12, 2020

To our OU BCM student body,

The OU BCM staff has been monitoring the ever-changing COVID-19 (coronavirus) situation. After much prayer, careful consideration, and meetings with health care professionals and community leaders, we have decided to cancel the Glen Eyrie Spring Break Conference for 2020.

This was not an easy decision, nor one that we took lightly. We strongly believe it is the best decision for our ministry, and community of students. Only a few days ago the risk seemed minor, but the severity of the situation seems to grow each day.

As a staff, we need to be responsible citizens of the OU and Oklahoma community. The Spring Break conference would have placed a large number of people in a confined space for a week’s time. On top of that, our housing for the conference would have been spread throughout Colorado Springs, which raises the risk factor of various people coming in contact with the disease.

Our concern is not only for the young people who would have attended the Spring Break conference but also for the untold number of people they would come in contact with after returning from the conference. We need to do our part in containing the spread of the virus.

In short, we are following the advice of medical experts by refraining from gathering in large groups during Spring Break.

Any money that OU students paid toward the Spring Break conference will be refunded. Please be patient, as this may take some time for the OU BCM staff to refund students. Any money given toward the Spring Break conference from donors will be used for our Spring Break conferences in the future, just as was intended.

We plan to share more information soon regarding the rest of the semester and OU BCM events and meetings.

While we are disappointed the conference is canceled, we as a staff are not in a place of fear or panic. We are trusting the Lord and attempting to be wise leaders who take care of our flock. Jesus is Lord, and He is always in control. Our plans may be changing, but the Lord never changes. Join us as we proclaim today, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom, I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” Psalm 18:2.

In Christ,

Shane Kammerer – Director, OU BCM
Brent Jenkins – Associate Director, OU BCM
